Nidec Industrial Solutions announces two major projects for green hydrogen production and storage, respectively
Thanks to its consolidated experience and the reliability of the solutions it proposes, increasingly strategic for the energy transition sector, the Group is strengthening its leadership in the hydrogen market
Milan, 02 August 2022 – Nidec Industrial Solutions, part of the Energy & Infrastructure Division of the Nidec Group, one of the Groups committed to relaunching the economy with an eye to greater sustainability, is consolidating its position as a key player in the fast-growing green hydrogen market, thanks to two new important orders. The first, from a world leader in the production, storage and distribution of green hydrogen, involves the production of green hydrogen by supplying a 5 MW power-to-supply unit to be installed as part of an electrolyzer testing system. The second, on the other hand, concerns the storage of liquid hydrogen, and involves the supplying by Nidec Industrial Solutions – to a client leader in the reciprocating compressor sector – of 14 electric motors for compression trains, to be shipped to a leading green hydrogen company in the United States. The plants will be installed in the south-west of the United States.
These two new projects draw attention to the consolidation of Nidec Industrial Solutions’ range of solutions, aimed at new energy sectors, particularly that of green hydrogen, which is emerging as central to the future European energy scenario, the development of which will also be promoted through the growing investments announced by the European Union.
With regard to the first order concerning the production of hydrogen, the power supply unit will be housed in a container 40 feet long, and will use 6 Nidec AD7000 power modules working in parallel to generate 5.6 MW of energy. The power supply unit has several unique features such as a hermetically sealed oil transformer that uses vegetable oil, thereby further reducing the environmental impact of the system. Nidec Industrial Solutions is not new to the hydrogen market; it has already provided power supply units for more than 10 green hydrogen electrolyzer systems throughout Europe. This noteworthy experience has led to the designing of a highly cost-effective, compact, modular unit with a high degree of reliability and efficiency, based on Nidec converters and power control systems.
In the second project, which involves Nidec Industrial Solutions playing a key role in the storage of liquid hydrogen, the company is supplying the electrical component of the order, i.e. 14 electric motors, to be coupled with the mechanical part, which consists of 14 compressors. As a result, the 14 connected machines, designed jointly by Nidec Industrial Solutions and the client, will be able to transform hydrogen from a gaseous to a liquid state and store 15 to 30 tonnes of hydrogen per day in special tanks. This is a major investment that will continue with the production of a further 20 units by the end of the calendar year, and further systems in Korea, and it will consolidate Nidec Industrial Solutions as a partner of reference in the development of ranges of large electric motors for its clientele. In this particular case, they are specifically designed to reduce the installation time and costs of these systems on a large scale and in a large number of sites located in various regions.
“With our technologies we are contributing to the growth of the hydrogen market, which we have already been active in for some time in the production of green hydrogen, and where we are expanding our presence by also developing the electrical components for its storage,” says CEO Dominique Llonch. “In this highly dynamic market, we present ourselves as a group capable of taking the demands of our customers on board – from lowering production costs to standardization, from increasing capacity to shortening delivery times – creating product lines that meet their needs in a timely manner. Both of these projects will lead to the production of green energy, guaranteeing maximum reliability and safety, thanks to our experience in developing machinery designed to operate in hazardous areas; these are two further milestones that confirm the key role in innovation that Nidec Industrial Solutions plays in the future of the energy industry.”
Nidec Industrial Solutions has been involved in some of the largest green hydrogen pilot projects in Europe, many of which were the first of their kind. In addition to our involvement in green hydrogen production plants, however, Nidec Industrial Solutions also has a wide range of solutions for the production of non-green hydrogen.
