IEEE Industry Applications Magazine feature
We are pleased to inform you that the November-December 2016 Issue (Vol22-6) of the IEEE Industry Applications Magazine features an article written by Fabio Luise, Freddie Agnolet, Stefano Pieri, Maurizio Scalabrin, Massimiliano Di Chiara and Matteo De Martin (R & D MOTORS AND GENERATORS, Nidec ASI spa, Monfalcone, Gorizia, Italy) along with Alberto Tessarolo (Engineering and Architecture Department, University of Trieste, Trieste, Italy).
The article illustrates an industrial R&D project aimed at identifying a cost-effective response to the increasingly more challenging high-speed motor requirements emerging in the gas industry sector. To meet the very high efficiency, dynamic performance, and reliability standards required by cutting-edge turbomachinery drive applications, a special synchronous PM motor prototype was developed. The identified solution includes AMBs for rotor levitation, a slotless stator design, and a Halbach-array PM rotor. Motor design optimization through genetic algorithms is presented as a tool to search for the best tradeoff between performance targets and industrial production cost reduction. Extensive prototype testing under converter supply is presents as part of the successful validation of the chosen design solution.
