Port of Trieste chooses Nidec ASI for the electrification of docks V and VII
The cold ironing project using shore-to-ship technologies by Nidec ASI will create a model infrastructure for sustainable shipping mobility
Milan, 9 October 2023 – Nidec ASI, part of the Motion & Energy Division of the Nidec Group, together with its RTI partners (ICOP, Step Impianti and Ceisis), have been chosen by the Port Authority of the Eastern Adriatic Sea for the electrification projects of docks V and VII, used for the berthing of freight ferries and container ships, within the Port of Trieste.
The challenge, for one of the busiest areas of the port, is to minimize emissions not only within the port area, but also in the immediately surrounding urban areas, increasing the efficiency and safety of the port network and reducing noise pollution typically caused by large motors constantly running. In particular, cold ironing technologies will be implemented that will allow ships docked at the quay with their motors switched off to be powered by electricity supplied from the port hint.
Nidec ASI’s shore-to-ship systems, the docks will be able to meet the required electrical power demand. In line with the regulations governing these installations, the system planned for dock V will be able to distribute power from 3.5MVA to 11kV at three different connection points. The system for dock VII will be able to distribute power from 7.5MVA to 6.6kV along the entire length of the quay where container ships dock.
The solution provided by Nidec ASI and its partners ensures the management of the entire electrical system: grid interface switchboards, frequency converter systems, ship interface equipment, control and protection systems, mobile cable handling and auxiliary systems. Together, these components make it possible to meet the electrical needs required by ships to connect to the shore network and shut down diesel motors.
This is the seventh and eighth European dock electrification project to be awarded to the company, following those completed or in progress for the Port of Prà, the Port of Genoa, the Port of Savona, the Port of Gioia Tauro, the Port of Sète in France and the Port of Malta in Valletta.
The completion of the two projects in the Port of Trieste is expected by the second and third quarter of 2024, respectively, and is part of a broader project for the electrification of the docks in the ports of Trieste and Monfalcone, for which a total funding of 31 million euro has been allocated. This disbursement is the result of the ‘Green Ports’ measure of the NRP, which aims to improve the efficiency and reduce the energy consumption of port facilities and activities.
“It is with great pleasure that we announce the assignment we have received, which will involve us at the forefront of the energy transformation of one of Italy’s most strategically important ports at international level, allowing us to bring to bear the transversal nature of our skills in the fields of shipping, automation, motors and power electronics,” said Dominique Llonch, CEO of Nidec ASI. “Nidec ASI’s contribution has been fundamental in achieving the goals of minimizing fossil fuels and the environmental impact of the shipping industry, testifying to both the effectiveness of our technologies and the distinctiveness of our know-how as fundamental building blocks for the creation of a sustainable infrastructure future.”
The agreement was signed in line with the European directive that requires the implementation of an electricity supply network along the coasts by 31 December 2025, so as to minimize the use of auxiliary motors on board for the self-production of the necessary electricity, significantly reducing emissions of CO2, nitrogen oxides and fine particles, as well as the acoustic impact. The project will also enhance Italy’s strategic and geographical position in international trade by strengthening freight transport links and facilitating the flow between land and sea.
