Nidec ASI at work on Monfalcone Port electrification project

Cruise

Portorosega will join the list of Italian Green Ports  thanks to Nidec ASI’s shore-to-ship technology

Milan, 28 February 2024 – Nidec ASI, part of the Motion & Energy Division of the Nidec Group, together with its RTI partners (ICOP and Step Impianti), were chosen by the Port Authority of the Eastern Adriatic Sea for the electrification projects of docks IV, V, VI in the Monfalcone Port.

The public tender worth EUR 6,56 million, financed by the PNRR, will enable Portorosega to become a Green Port as the cold ironing project on which Nidec ASI is working will reduce SOx, NOx, CO2 emissions and pollutants, such as particulate, from the port and will also help improve air quality in the port’s surrounding backwater and neighbouring urban areas.

Through the delivery of complete Nidec ASI conversion systems, the docks will be able to meet the demand for electrical power for the ships docked in the Port. In line with sustainability goals, at this project stage, the system planned for Docks IV, V, VI will be able to supply power value 4 MVA at 11 kV distribute in two different connection points (2MVA each).

A further benefit of the cold ironing project concerns the reduction of the acoustic impact that is typically affected by the low-frequency roar of ship engines during the docking phase. The new technological solutions in fact allow electricity to be transferred to the docked ship directly from the shore, without the need to keep fuel-fired power generators running.

In addition to this first phase of the project, in which Nidec ASI, with its RTI partners, was awarded the delivery of the entire shore-to-ship electrical system, a second phase is planned for the subsequent supply of equipment to docks I, II, and III dedicated to cruise connections of the entire port activity.

We are proud that Nidec ASI has been chosen, together with its partners, by the Port Authority of the Eastern Adriatic Sea. After the electrification project of the Port of Trieste, we will now also be involved in the green regeneration of the Port of Monfalcone, thus being able to make a tangible contribution to the quality of life of an area that we oversee through one of our main production sites.” said Dominique Llonch, CEO of Nidec ASI. “Aware of the set ambitious environmental protection and efficiency goals, we have brought all our expertise to develop a tailor-made sustainable electricity system that aligns perfectly with global efforts to promote greener transport systems aimed at mitigating climate change.

Monfalcone is the ninth European dock electrification project to be awarded to Nidec ASI, following those completed or in progress for the port of Trieste (docks V and VII), Prà, Genoa, Savona, Gioia Tauro, Sète in France and Valletta in Malta.
