Nidec Conversion, Obton and KYON ENERGY have initiated a major BESS installation project in Alfeld, Lower Saxony, with commissioning set for summer 2026

The large-scale BESS, with 137.5MW power output and 282MWh capacity at the 110kV taking over point, is designed to improve both power grid stability and the integration of fluctuating renewable generation

Dominique Llonch, CEO of Nidec Conversion: “This groundbreaking project in Germany underscores our commitment to driving the European energy transition with innovative, reliable solutions. By working alongside our trusted partners, we are delivering technologies that directly address grid stability and energy storage needs. Together, we are building a more resilient and sustainable energy infrastructure that benefits communities today and in the future.

Milan, February 12th, 2025 – Nidec Conversion, international provider of power conversion solutions for energy, mobility and the environment, has formed a partnership with Obton, a company among the top 10 solar players in Europe, and the German developer KYON ENERGY to install one of the largest BESS stand-alone in Germany to date. Located in the town of Alfeld, Lower Saxony, with commissioning scheduled for summer 2026, it is part of Obton’s ambitious BESS investment initiative in the country.

Nidec’s modular BESS consists of a control system and units equipped with electric power converters, transformers and batteries, and is designed to improve power grid stability, ranging from short-term balancing and frequency regulation to imbalance optimization. It further contributes to the larger integration of renewable energy into the electrical network. Its advanced control system provides real-time monitoring and adjustment, ensuring maximum flexibility for reliable and efficient energy distribution.

Germany’s ambitious target of reaching 100% renewable energy by 2032 amidst the energy transition offers significant opportunities, along with considerable challenges. In fact, while sustainable energy sources are steadily growing and transforming the electrical infrastructure, the transition demands crucial investments in advanced energy storage systems to address variability and ensure a reliable, uninterrupted power supply.

With its 137.5MW power output and 282MWh capacity at the 110kV taking over point, the large-scale BESS in Alfeld covers Nidec’s cutting-edge engineering, supply and commissioning based on the company’s containerized configuration. This encompasses the Nidec ACBox water cooled, including the Power Conversion System, the Energy and Power Management System as well as batteries that are fully integrated into the ACBox. The project partners, Obton and KYON ENERGY, have taken responsibility for financing, design, and operation of this flagship project, which aims to reshape energy supply and support the energy roadmap in Germany and Europe.

Dominique Llonch, CEO of Nidec Conversion, states: “This groundbreaking project in Germany underscores our commitment to driving the European energy transition with innovative, reliable solutions. By working alongside our trusted partners, we are delivering technologies that directly address grid stability and energy storage needs. Together, we are building a more resilient and sustainable energy infrastructure that benefits communities today and in the future.”

Nikolaj Krog Juhl, VP, Head of Commercial Development & Energy Storage of Obton, comments: “At Obton, we are thrilled and proud of this new project, which will play a key role in the European energy transition. We value the collaboration with our partners on this project and look forward to powering up this impressive project for the benefit of current and future generations, as well as the investors in the project.”

“For the success of the energy transition in Germany, it is essential to massively expand storage capacities. Battery storage systems are essential for integrating renewable energy into our power grids and ensuring security of supply in Germany. Realizing the project in Alfeld is a decisive step towards a sustainable and independent energy future”, says Florian Antwerpen, Managing Director of KYON ENERGY.
